Renowned film score composer and music producer Hans Florian Zimmer or Hans Zimmer, born on the 12th September 1957 is well known for his unique style of fusing electronic music with conventional orchestral music. Hans Zimmer has been awarded with many prestigious film awards including Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscars for his outstanding work as a film score composer.
The Frankfurt born Hans Zimmer moved to London during his teen years. Initially he composed advertising jingles for Air-Edel Associates. In 1980, Hans Zimmer teamed up with Geoff Downs, Trevor Horn and Bruce Woolley who in 1977 had formed the new wave band Buggles. Hans Zimmer briefly appeared in the Buggles 1979 music video entitled Video Killed the Radio Star. Having worked with Buggles, Hans Zimmer got an opportunity to work with Maurizio Arcieri and Christina Moser of the Italian group Krisma, a 1976 formed new wave band. He worked as a synthesizer for the third album Cathode Mamma for the band. Zimmer was also part of the band Helden for a brief period.
During the 1980s Hans Florian Zimmer along with prolific film composer Stanley Myers co-founded the Lillie Yard recording studio in London. Both Myers & Zimmer worked on integrating the traditional orchestral music with electronic music. This new sound was introduced in the movie Moonlighting in 1982 followed by success is Best Revenge in 1984, Insignificance in 1985 & also in 1985 My Beautiful Launderette. In 1986, Hans Zimmer joined up with the Scottish-American musician David Byrne and the Japanese musician and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, the outcome of this collaboration came out to be the1988 Oscar-winning score featured in the movie The Last Emperor. After the phenomenal success of this movie Zimmer worked on solo projects experimenting and combining the new and old musical technologies. Hans Zimmer’s first solo work was for the 1988 film A World Apart by Chris Menges.
However Hans Zimmer’s career rose to prominence when he composed a score for Barry Levinson’s 1988 film Rain Man in which he has used synthesizers with steel drums. The score received a nomination for the 1989 Academy Award. Hans Zimmer's next popular score came in the Oscar winning movie Driving Miss Daisy by Bruce Beresford in the year 1989. Zimmer received a 1991 Grammy Award for Driving Miss Daisy. In 1994 Zimmer worked on the commercially lucrative project The Lion King in which he used African choirs inspired by the film score of the 1992 movie, The Power of One. The Lion King soundtrack received many prestigious awards including a Golden Globe, an Oscar & two Grammies. After the phenomenal success of The Lion King, Hans Zimmer composed many other film scores such as The Thin Red Line & The Prince of Egypt released in the year 1998.
Hans Zimmer has many blockbusters to his credit including Gladiator in 2000, Hannibal in 2001, The Last Samurai in 2003, Batman Begins in 2005, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, The Da Vinci Code in 2006 and The Dark Knight in 2008. The Last Samurai in 2003 was his 100th film score for which Hans Zimmer achieved both a Broadcast Film Critics award and a Golden Globe in 2004.
After completing his 100th film score, Hans Zimmer performed live for the very first time in concert with a 100-piece choir and a 100-piece orchestra at the 27th Annual Flanders International Film Festival. Hans Zimmer has been honored with numerous awards including the 2003 Frederick Loewe Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASCAP, 1996 BMI's esteemed Richard Kirk Award for lifetime achievement & the Lifetime Achievement Award in Film Composition from the National Board of Review. Today, Hans Zimmer is popularly regarded as the father of integrating the traditional orchestral music with new electronic music.
Hans produced the theme for the boxing reality television series The Contender and also composed the soundtracks of the anime series Blood +. Several other composers including Steve Jablonsky, Heitor Pereira, James Dooley & Geoff Zanelli serve in Hans Zimmer’s film music studio Remote Control Productions.
